1.0 PURPOSE

 

The purpose of this procedure is to prepare
the execution sequence guidelines and requirements and to establish a method or
a system to control the Plastering / Pointing work and inspection to be used under Civil, Structural & Architectural Works at NAME OF PROJECT.

 

2.0    SCOPE

 

The scope covers the material and
method of Plastering/ Pointing i.e., plain plaster (Inside/Outside). The
materials and workmanship shall be in accordance with the relevant Indian
Standard Specifications, Codes of Particles & good engineering practices.

 

     3.0  REFERENCES

part shall form the reference documents:

       5.0   METHODOLOGY

 

The sequence of operations/activities
and corresponding method is as follows:

 

Materials: Cement confirm to I.S.455,
Sand  Confirm to I.S.1542, water, 20
gauge G.I  wire mesh  and G.I Nails U type as per E.I.L.
specification

 

Cement, sand,
water for plastering/pointing work shall conform to EIL specification. Sand for
plastering and pointing shall confirm to EIL spec 6-68-002 Rev. 2 and shall be
hard, durable, clean, and free from coatings /organic matters/silt-clay. Fine
sand shall be obtained from river beds and shall be clean, sharp and. free from
excessive deleterious matter. The sand shall not contain more than 5% of clay
and silt as determined by field test with a measuring cylinder. 

Water shall be of
potable having   pH value not less than
6.

 

Tools &
Plant  :Trowel, Chisel, Plumb bob,  Aluminum 
or  Wooden  rectangular section  of 1.80 meter to 2.10 meter long and spirit
level

 

 Preparation of Cement sand mortar

 

Cement
mortar shall be prepared by mixing cement, sand by volume .Proportion of cement
and sand shall be 1:4 (1 part of cement & 4 parts of sand) or as
specified/shown on the drawings. The mixing of cement sand mortar shall be done
in a mechanical mixer operated manually/by power, or by hand mixing with the
prior permission of Engineer-in-charge depending on the quantum, nature and
location of work. All mortar thickness are as per Project specification.

 

Preparation of surface:

Scaffolding/ Staging :  Scaffolding / Staging  which is to be done as per Project Specification

 

Application of Plaster:

To
ensure even, specified thickness, plaster of 150 mm x 150 mm shall be first
applied horizontally and vertically at not more than 2 meter interval over the
entire surface to serve as gauges. The surface of these gauged areas shall be
truly in the plane of the finished plaster surface. The mortar shall be brought
to true surface by working with a wooden straight edge reaching across the
gauges with small upward and sideways movements at a time. Finally the surface
shall be finished off true with a trowel or wooden float to obtain a smooth
texture. Excessive toweling or overworking the float shall be avoided. All
corners, arises. Angles and junctions shall be truly vertical/ horizontal and
shall be carefully finished. Rounding or chamfering of corners, arises,
junctions etc. shall be carried out with proper templates to the size required.
In suspending the work, the plaster shall be left. Cut clean to line, both
horizontally and vertically. When recommencing the plastering, the edge of the
old work shall be scrapped clean and wetted before plastering the adjoining
area. Plastering work shall be closed on the border of the wall and nearer than
150 mm to any corners or arises and shall not be closed on the body of the features
such as plaster bands, cornices nor at the corners or arises.

 

For
external plaster, the plastering operations shall be started from top to floor
and carried downwards. For internal plaster, the plastering may be started
wherever the building frame, roofing and brickwork are ready.

 

In
case of Two-layer plaster work, the first layer surfaces to be beaten up by
edges of wooden tapers and the subsequent layer shall be applied to the
specified thickness after this coat is allowed to set for 3 to 5 days depending
on weather conditions. The thickness of plastering shall be as specified in
drawing.

 In all Brick / Stone Masonry & RCC joints
Wire Mesh of 150 mm width 20 gauge thickness stretched tight & fixed with
GI U type nails before plastering.

Any
defective work which gives hollow sound shall be cut into rectangular shape and
again plastering work to be done as per above.

  Pointing:

 

Pointing shall be of the type as shown/specified in the drawings such as
flush, cut or weather struck, raised and cut pointing etc.

 

The joints shall
be raked to a depth that the minimum depth from the edge of the Brick/stone
shall be less than 20mm.

 

The
mortar shall be pressed into the racked out joints with a pointing trowel according
to the specified type of pointing. The mortar shall be spread over the corner
edges or surfaces of the masonry and pointing shall then be finished with the
pointed tool

 

       Flush pointing: 

       The mortar shall be pressed into    

       joints and shall be flushed with stone walls.
The 

       edges shall be neatly trimmed with trowel.

 

Cut pointing: 

The mortar shall first be pressed
into joints. The top of the horizontal joints shall be neatly pressed back by
about 15mm with the pointing tool so that the joint is sloping from top to
bottom. The vertical joint will also be similarly pointed. The junctions of
vertical joints with the horizontal joints shall be at right angles in case of brick
masonry work.

 

Raised and cut
pointing: This type of
pointing shall project from the wall facing with its edges cut parallel so as
to have a uniformly raised band of about 6mm and width 10mm more as directed.
The pointing shall be finished to a smooth but hard surface.

Curing work

 

Curing shall be started 24 hours
after finishing the plaster/pointing work. The plaster shall be kept wet for a
min. period of 7 days and during this period the plaster/pointing shall be
protected from all damages by suitable means as approved by the
Engineer-in-charge. The date of work of plastering/pointing shall be marked on
the surfaces to ensure the proper duration of curing.

 

Finishes

 

       All the form work shall be so done that no plastering         or other external finish is required. All burrs shall be         rubbed smooth with
carborandum stone and the               finished work shall present a uniform shade and                 finish. All the exposed surfaces shall be provided               with a coat of cement wash
free of cost if the                       rendered surfaces are not of acceptable standard as         per the
sole. 

5.0  HEALTH,
SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

Ø
Contractor
shall ensure that the machine operators involved must be experienced/competent persons.

Ø
All
PPE is a must in this activity.

Ø
It
is to be noted that the special care to be adopted against snake/insects
bite.

Ø
During
the movement of equipment the operator must blow the horn to caution the people
around.

Ø
All
Measuring & Test Equipment’s used must be well maintained.

Ø
All
lifting devices & Tolls used shall be well maintained.

Ø
It
is to be taken care that no spillage of fuel or lubricants is allowed at the site.

Ø
Contractor
shall arrange Regular Tool Box Meeting.

Ø
Contractor
shall arrange a First Aid Box at the site.

 

7.0 DOCUMENTATION
& RECORDS

Documentation
shall be in the line with approved inspection/test plans. The quality document
will be maintained by systematic implementation of this procedure and
generating necessary quality records. Inspection reports in approved formats
shall be raised upon carrying out the work.
